Ayoade, the author of this book, interviews Ayoade, an insane and ego-menicale filmmaker version of himself. I’m changing tack a little for the next couple of blogs (partly as I’ve run out of spoof memoir indexes to review for now) and I’ll be focusing on non-fiction books by current comedians – although ‘non-fiction’ may be rather a misnomer for this one.

Over ten brilliantly insightful and often erotic interviews, Ayoade examines himself fully and without mercy, leading a breathless investigation into this once-in-a-generation visionary. I read this book because I am an admirer of Richard Ayoade's performance on the British sitcom, The IT Crowd, and his two films, Submarine and The Double. He and Footlights vice-president John Oliver wrote and performed in several productions together, appearing in both Footlights' 1997 and 1998 touring shows: Emotional Baggage (directed by Matthew Holness) and Between a Rock and a Hard Place (directed by Cal McCrystal). Ayoade appeared in the satirical comedy series Time Trumpet in 2006, which is set in the year 2031 and saw Ayoade and other celebrities reminiscing about the year 2007 onwards. The Migration Museum explores how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has made us who we are – as individuals and as a nation.

In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. My only gripe which has been mentioned by other users is the heavy use of referring to the appendix which is fine with a paperback but for my Kindle edition become quiet a chore. I can’t wait to read his other book — Ayoade on Top which he describes as “the definitive book about perhaps the best cabin crew dramedy ever filmed: View From the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow…. Request Rejected This page is unavailable due to either geographic restrictions or other restrictions in place at this time.I still chuckled a bit, and was charmed by Ayoade's quirkiness, but I thought it was too little to give this one a decent rating. Somewhere along reading this book, having also seen Ayoade as the adorable geek in IT Crowd and watching some of his interviews online I realized that I have actually heard him use the phrase “Take your top off” in three different unrelated contexts.

The beginning of the book brought the majority of laughs and whether that type of humour burns out quite quickly or the humour deteriorated as the book progressed, I found the latter stages of the book a struggle to get through.Produced by Warp Films and Film4, it premiered at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010, had a general release in the UK in March 2011, and was released in June in the US after being picked up by the Weinstein Company for North America.
