About this deal

Towards the end of the play he performs the final moments between Dan and his girlfriend Jenna (Amy Zoldan) as she relives their final conversation. We commissioned Mark Wheeller to turn Dan’s story into a play as part of our passionate commitment when Dan died to prevent any harm happening to anyone else’s family from drugs. When Dan, a sixteen year old boy loses his life under sad circumstances it is nothing short of a tragedy.

Whether that's putting new work on stages across the world or supporting our outreach and learning programmes, every purchase you make really does make a difference. His work has been a staple part of the Drama curriculum both in the UK and abroad for the past three decades. The Dan his parents knew was the real Dan, but not the complete Dan, and a wretched mistake ended his life. I Love You, Mum - I Promise I Won't Die was commissioned by the charity set up in Daniel's memory to raise awareness about the danger of party drugs. That fateful evening is told through the words of his school friends and family, divided into two hard-hitting acts in Mark Wheeller's verbatim play. With three separate Lucian Freud exhibitions currently on, Graham Hooper took time to visit and here is his review of these contrasting shows. Dan’s parents share his childhood milestones and joys, growing up in a loving family, and how he made one mistake. Predicated partly on Black History Month, Elayne Ogbeta’s muliti-layered play presents Grandad (Marcus Hercules) and his primary school age granddaughter, Abi (Jazmine Wilkinson) in his garden. I remember crying as I related it to my wife – not because it was sad, but because it was brimful of love.

The true story is enacted from verbatim interviews with Dan’s family and friends, curated by author Mark Wheeller into a one hour play, skilfully directed by Elliot Montgomery, artistic director of Tie It Up Theatre, a company which focuses on theatre in education.

Fiona and Tim have done more than cope they have set up a foundation in Daniel’s name ‘The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation’ ( www. I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won't Die is the true story of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, just 16 years old when he died of an MDMA overdose – the title being his final words to his mum.

We’re delighted that from September 2022 the play will be one of seven set texts on the Eduqas GCSE drama syllabus, alongside Shakespeare, JB Priestly, Malorie Blackman and Benjamin Zephaniah. The verbatim nature of the whole show gives a naturally convincing edge to all the narration and Wheeller balances the different voices perfectly. This poignant and eminently readable biography of the play is drawn from interviews with Dan's family, friends and the OYT company. Alex Colley incorporates video into the show beautifully and Christopher Bevan’s music and sound adds energy and intensity to the show where it’s needed. He has three children and lives just outside the New Forest, with his wife Rachael, and Labrador, Dusty.

It has been an amazing journey and I am looking forward to the Theatres reopening next week (from 17th May 2021).

When sixteen-year-old Daniel Spargo-Mabbs dies on a night out at a rave after taking a lethal dose of MDA family, friends and teachers are left shocked and grief-stricken.
