I struggled to get through some parts just because of how completely unfair things had become and how miserable I felt reading about them. Ugh, this is such a downgrade for her character to be seen as some petty love interest that makes her leave the agency at the end because she just can't handle things. Like I said, it's a cliffhanger - yuck - but it's also smart, and drastic, and it finally brings some of the stylistic aplomb seen in the Bartimaeus series to this new series. Lucy had valid reasons for not liking Holly, and Holly coming from a more complicated, less corporate background than Lucy assumed doesn't negate those reasons.

I’m telling you, when I was listening to it (audiobook-ed it), I was getting goosebumps at certain parts, it’s very properly scary.I thought this was a good addition to the series and the book starts off with the crew of Anthony Lockwood, George and Lucy tackling ghosts while there's a ghost epidemic brewing in the Chelsea neighborhood of London. Stroud makes it a clear point, by the end, that both girls are jealous of one another for no reason whatsoever.

The books in this series are The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye, and Ptolemy's Gate, his first books to be published in the United States. I wasn’t sure about giving out five stars because I’m a little wary of the direction the story might take next, but well, the book itself is fantastic. Still, even as some questions are answered, many more come to the fore, resulting in a dawning sense of urgency.Meanwhile in flashbacks, Lockwood shares part of his past with Lucy and George by showing them the closed room of the house. I'm not saying that you have to throw out snarky Ghostbusters jokes every few pages, Stroud, but at least give me something? Part of the book involves Lucy exploring and developing her ability to talk to ghosts, often by putting her own team at risk and having to learn lessons about keeping her friends safe despite her curiosity etc. Disini juga (mungkin) ada sedikit hint romance antara Lucy n Lockwood :p Tapi yang paling beda menurutku adalah asisten baru yang dipekerjakan Lockwood, Holly Munro. More on the competition: That last big conversation Lucy and Holly have, where Stroud tries to show Holly's side and to paint her behavior as rational, does real disservice to the portrayal of Lucy's insight.
