Overall A true classic, Oban's 14 year old is a great coastal dram for lovers of lightly smoked, fresh malts. It opens with a light, heathery, fruity and zesty sets of smells amongst the initial alcoholic burn.

A review of this single malt is definitely long overdue, and I realized that rectifying this gap in Malt’s archives would be great for the site and its readers while also serving as an excellent way of getting myself back into the rhythms of writing. I think it’s more to do with the fact that you’re using a warmer surface to condense the spirit, therefore the rate of condensation is lower – letting the spirit ‘hang out’ with the copper longer. I’d prefer to think its popularity is because there is something about the fresh cleanliness of the nose, its orange oils, chocolate, and zesty-zingy and yes, occasionally salty spiciness that is instantly appealing. The finish is quick and woody, with a similar aftertastes that you get from having a bowl of skin-on red grapes.A little salty; a little malty; honey sweetness, big orange zest (amongst other citrus fruits); and a lovely underlying smoke that doesn’t really overplay it’s part. Once that settles though that zesty and citrusy set of flavours is joined by a real heather honey sweetness, a good bodied malt and just a little smoke. I say you can find much more interesting drams, or even smoother and tastier drams, for much less than you now pay for this.

Plus, Nick Offerman apparently drinks it as a deviation from his Lagavulin fixation, if you believe his (Diageo sponsored…) “ My Tales Of Whisky” video clips. In effect, the town grew up around the distillery and since its foundation in 1794 it has played a crucial role in local life. The tiny lamp glass-shaped copper pot stills that make Oban’s Scotch are among the smallest in Scotland, and the liquor they distill is slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs outside among the rooftops, exposed to the salted sea air, bringing a distinct depth of flavour said to go very well with salted caramel. The West Highland malt is still produced in the same unhurried, traditional fashion and this 14 year old is a classic whisky from the distillery.

Background: Along the shores of Lorn lies a record of man far more ancient than that of any city in the land. Would you like to receive occasional messages with information about promotions, new wines, events and tastings? Fine single malt whisky has been made in Oban for over 200 years, in one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The distillery offers a range of expressions, including the signature Oban 14 Year Old and a variety of limited edition releases. It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without Ocado Limited's prior consent, nor without due acknowledgement. Pre-dating the town of Oban, it was originally established in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson.

Founded in 1794 at Argyll, the distillery was initially operated as a brewery but began distillation shortly after.Elegant and glowing, it marries the sea air character of the Island malts of the soft, richly fruit style of the highland, creating its own rich tasting West Highland malt. The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. The spirit for this whisky has been produced the same way since the distillery was founded in the small fishing town of Oban back in 1794.
