About this deal

Colour is richly saturated, without any major shift towards warm or cool, and the lens feels very natural and transparent in its rendering. Pro is actually a good macro lens, offering a minimum focusing distance of 20cm and a maximum magnification of 0. The results are very interesting – noticeably different than those of the rival Panasonic G X VARIO 12–35 mm f/2.

As you can see, if you set the lens to the maximum 40mm telephoto focal length, you can actually fill most of the frame. Because of the versatility of the zoom, the quality of the PEN F, at many times -how can I say this- I felt powerful. Even corrected the lens has high amounts of vignetting in the corners at 12mm (over one stop wide open, two-thirds of a stop even at f/8). The Olympus is noticeably better near the maximum relative aperture and has a bit wider focal range. With the 12-40mm lens attached to an Olympus OM-D E-M1 body, focusing is extremely quick in most situations.Zuiko PRO was introduced alongside the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and is part of the company's new "Zuiko PRO" line of professional-grade Micro Four Thirds lenses. This high-performance lens fully utilizes the high image quality performance of the camera body even with High Res Shot mode.

When mounting this lens to a camera, it feels very securely locked in the mount, with the weather-sealing gasket providing a tight, reassuringly snug fit. The focusing ring offers an excellent grip and pulling the ring towards the camera body reveals the distance scale and enables manual focus. Zuiko PRO is built as such, with an all-metal construction that's splash-proof, dust-proof and freeze-proof. This week away is a prime example- I have brought extra stuff out of a force of habit, but the extra lens, the dust blower and loads of my extras lived either in my bag or AirBNB and didn’t see the light of day.Manual focusing is also available on this lens, both as full manual focus as well as full-time manual focus override while AF is enabled. The focusing ring is just like the previous one’s: it can slip into manual focus mode if you pull it back. By the time you get to the 40mm telephoto end of the lens, things have reversed into about 1% pin cushion distortion. I changed from the large Pentax with all their associated gorgeous lenses for the Olympus OMD EM1 plus the 12-40, 7-14 and 40-135 Pro lenses, I now get super sharp images and lots more keepers but the main thing is just enjoying my photography more with this system its a joy! Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc.

The 12-40 weighs 382g, which is nothing by normal standards but makes it something of a brick for M4/3.Nottinghamshire based creative, with a focus on branding, digital and print design alongside photography. Vignetting on the Olympus 12-40mm lens is very well controlled throughout the entire aperture range and at all focal lengths. We use cookies and similar technologies to recognize your repeat visits and preferences, and analyze traffic. They're much more convenient and accessible than fixed focal lengths, especially on reportage style jobs where timing is everything, but they can't match the bite, separation, or just the sheer tactility of a prime lens. This tells me that the table the camera is using is more a smoothed curve than a very precise set of values for each and every focal length.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 used for this test is a great match for the lens, offering good balance, fast auto focus, and full environmental seals. Part of this might be because, as a PRO lens, Olympus advertises the 12-40 as extensively environmentally sealed - it's meant to be shock, dust, splash, and freeze-proofed to the same level as the E-M1 body. With the higher end mu43 cameras, these things are fast, and what you lose in terms of stealth and lens markings, you gain in terms of blazing AF speeds. I haven't dared test it myself, but reports from braver photographers seem to indicate it's the real deal. For sure there is no more stealth factor, as the lens is pretty big, and there are no lens markings for hyperfocal focusing or zone focusing, but there are a few advantages. Pro II shares the same pull-back mechanism for autofocus and manual focus switching as many other lenses. One unexpected bonus of the complex design is that the 12-40 has a near focus limit of just 20cm, even at the telephoto end. EDUCATION: Chris graduated Magna Cum Laude from Adelphi University with a degree in Communications in Journalism in 2009. The front element is weather-sealed, as is the lens mount with a rubbery gasket to form a tight seal against the camera.
