About this deal

Instead, Fluke digs away at the snow in front of his tombstone to show Carol who he really is by uncovering the word "forever" at the bottom, a phrase he often said to her as a human. Whilst we’re constantly told that dogs are natural born optimists, what Herbert fails to mention is that they are also controlled by their stomach. Fluke is a story of a puppy as he grows up in a harsh world, but he isn't quite like the other dogs, he has strange recollections of a time before he was a dog, when he was a man. Fluke is a charming lead, a mixture of human and canine thoughts, driven by the fear that soon his human thoughts will fade away to nothing.

For the first half of the novel, the various adventures that Fluke finds himself within are both exciting and heart-warming, as well as enabling Herbert to really build upon the characterisation of Fluke.

I've talked with, eaten with, and played with so many different species my head aches trying to remember them all.

He is more than he thinks, more than he can remember and in the depths of his brain the memory of what he once was is clawing for release .Carol, deducing from one of Brian's drawings where he may have gone, uses her car to break open the cemetery gates and picks up Brian. The descriptions of the diminutive world as seen through the eyes of a mongrel and his tormenting memories rising from the depths of his consciousness are a delight to read. I loved the book and enjoyed reading Lineker’s thoughts, and also found myself making a mental note, which was simply re-read James Herbert’s Fluke.

With Herbert’s usual flair (although there is a lot less horror compared to what we are given in some of his other books), we’re pulled into the story. Fluke is also accepted by Rumbo’s owner, a scrap-metal merchant, who only feeds them occasionally so they have to fend for themselves most of the time. He monologues that he finally accepted that he can no longer be the family man he should have been, and that he should just cherish the life he has now.I won’t reveal what happens at the end but Fluke now is determined to complete his odyssey back to his human family even though the badger he meets tries to dissuade him from doing so. Although there are some violent scenes in this book, such as a fight between Rumbo and a large rat, there are also many comical passages.

I read this book many years ago and gave it to a friend saying if you enjoy it pass it on to a friend of yours. I first read this as a young teenager, but I only had the vaguest of recollections of it so it was love to revisit. His tales of the supernatural are often written with a flair to thrill the reader and have elements of horror, crime and fantasy which adds to the enjoyment factor.
