About this deal

Someone threw a stone through the television-room window during an episode of EastEnders—probably just one of the local teenagers expressing his feelings of youthful alienation, but the next thing Mum was on the phone to everyone, saying that someone was trying to “put the frighteners” on Helen, that they “wanted her off the case. There's one sister to go-will the next book be about Helen Walsh the unfeeling possibly sociopath P. Laurie is misguided, but her effort and loyalty spring from a true heart, and she considers her project mostly successful. A key plot point, while you'd have to be in a coma to not figure out, wasn't actually stated until about the midpoint of the story. She has the "Best Job in the World" as a PR exec for a top-selling urban beauty brand, a lovely apartment in New York, and a perfect husband --.

Anybody Out There - Marian Keyes

The prologue foreshadows the aforementioned surprise, something the author has done in her other novels, but this time she creates something truly unique and riveting. She earned her law degree from Dublin University and then travelled to London where she worked in an administrative job in an accounts office.Desperate for contact, Anna tries charlatan psychics, celebrity mediums and contacting-the-dead support groups. I also love how Mammy Walsh tries to use popular sayings to make her seem more young and hip to the way the kids speak. All the different packets and jars stood on a small, elaborately carved table—several china dogs of unparalleled hideousness had been shifted to make way for them and now sat on the floor looking reproachfully at me—and Mum began sorting through them, popping out capsules and shaking pills from bottles. Although Keyes's universe is harsh and idiosyncratic, she addresses human agony with the lightest and most compassionate of touches and reminds you that, no matter how bad it gets, the world turns and wounds heal.

There is a broadness and detail of the topics covered that make them a richer read than most other novelists aimed at females these days. Over 400 pages of a widow’s emotional recovery would be hard-going if not for Keyes’s humor and grand cast of characters with their own quirky subplots.

In This Charming Man, The Other Side of the Story, and The Brightest Star In The Sky, Keyes tells her story from the viewpoints of multiple characters and deals with a range of serious social ills, and those novels are by far her best. I also love her interfering in Rachel’s wedding, I can totally understand why Anna said she left her to complete organise the food for her wedding to Aidan! I don't know what it is that she does; I don't know the incantation that is invisibly carved into the pages of her books, spellbinding you by page one. It had been given to her by the missing woman’s sister and all Mum got for her trouble was a badly mashed shoulder.

But all these flashbacks are taking place when Anna is laid up in Dublin with serious injures and an absent husband. You can actually see them thinking: They lookthe same, but this Helen has bewitched me like a drug, whereas that Anna is just so-what .Well, that’s not really true – my family is far more dramatic what with broken marriages and suicide attempts and drug addiction and Helen, but Mum uses Angela Kilfeather as the gold standard: bad and all as her daughters are, at least they’re not lesbians who French-kiss their girlfriends beside suburban leylandii. They enlighten me, they make me think about the circumstances of people, and they make me feel a plethora of emotions.

Anybody Out There - Penguin Books UK

I would find it terribly depressing but she says it doesn’t bother her because she’s always known that men are total scumbags. The book opens with Anna recuperating at her parents' home in Ireland after suffering from a serious accident in which she has little recollection. As soon as she's able, Anna's flying back to Manhattan, mystified but determined to find out how her life turned upside down. However, because her life had begun to resemble, however briefly, a crime drama, Mum got carried away and tried to break down the locked apartment door by running at it with her shoulder—even though, and I can’t stress this enough, Helen had a key. The publisher encouraged her to submit a full-length novel and Keyes began work on her first book, Watermelon.I think Marian Keyes books would be better if she'd just written them all as different stories with seperate characters rather than trying to tie them together as the Walsh sisters and kept them simpler by sticking to the main storyline. I came away with this knowing that, although it wasn't a perfect read, I now have a new author to read and enjoy.
