About this deal

This gives you the option to simulate a sunset, where the light slowly darkens after 15, 30 or 60 minutes, filling the room with soothing red tones. It looks more like a speaker than a clock, with the time on a small screen at the bottom rather than a bigger one in the centre. Most wake-up lights have a rather distinctive look, but the Beurer Wake Up Light WL50 could easily pass for a regular table lamp.

Unlike most of the alarms we tested, there’s no actual clock on these lights and they won’t wake you with the radio or even any noise. That’s going to be particularly useful when I’m abroad, and don’t necessarily have access to all the mains adapters I need. But wakeup lights do so much more pleasantly; by slowly increasing the level of light in your room, thus mimicking the rising of the sun. All of these clocks will wake you up with a light each morning, so you won’t go far wrong with any of them. These strip lights can be stuck almost anywhere you fancy and are very easy to get up and running, with a sticky back that presses onto flat surfaces.

Alternatively, you can choose to wake to an FM radio station, though (as with the Lumie Bodyclock Active 250) there's no DAB radio, and the reception wasn't great.

It doubles up as a bedside lamp, too: there are ten available white light levels, as well as mood lighting in six colours. If you'd prefer to fall asleep without light, take a look at our guides to the best white noise machines and the best sleep earplugs for some great devices that will help block out distractions.

But there’s no need to make matters even worse by waking up to a shrill alarm that jolts you out of a deep sleep and makes you more likely to hit the snooze button and turn over. You can also use the light to help you fall off to sleep, as it offers a reverse effect if you want to unwind in a sunset atmosphere. The sensor surface on the top of the loudspeaker has intuitive and simple touch operation for the alarm (on/off), snooze function, brightness and mood light. Our tester also liked the fact it could charge devices via a USB plug and could display 16 million colour combinations for use during the day. We also appreciated the fact there were some controls on the lamp, so we didn’t always have to reach for our phone.Small, slim and Quiet Mark certified, it’s one of the easiest clocks to find room for on a crowded beside table.

If you find an inaccuracy in our frequently asked questions, please let us know by using our contact form. We could work out how to set the alarm and use the radio without even glancing at the instructions and then simply had to tap the top to start snooze mode. Older models like the Bodyclock Active 250 changed brightness in quite sudden jumps, but Lumie has honed its tech over the years to give a more natural effect that won't jar you awake. The best wakeup lights help us awaken in a natural way, just like our ancestors on the plains did; as the sun rose over the horizon and the sky gradually lightened. If the light gradually brightens over a prolonged amount of time it helps prepare the body for waking up, so when your eyes finally open you’ve already made the transition from sleeping to waking internally. He has also worked for a wide range of mainstream titles including Radio Times, NME, Heat, Company and Bella. Wake-up lights are generally meant to simulate a natural transition rom dark to light and vice-versa.
