About this deal

The part I’ve enjoyed most is that the Moto G50 doesn’t take an age to process its photos, unlike the Moto G30 and Moto G10. Confusingly, such an omission also makes it feel less capable than both the Moto G10 and Moto G30, which offer four rear cameras including an ultra-wide lens. The phone is available in a choice of two color schemes - Aqua Green or Steel Grey - with the only storage option being 64GB in the UK, with a 128GB variant available elsewhere.

Images come out looking reasonably pleasant but there are issues with a certain lack of depth and also the restrictions that come from a digital-only zoom. IPS display, which is a perfect size for browsing the web, scrolling through social media, reading ebooks, streaming movies, playing games and more. Unfortunately, the moto G50’s glossy back does attract fingerprints, although you should be able to solve this issue by keeping the handset in a protective case.

Characteristics they share include an all-plastic build made to look like a phone with aluminium sides and a glass back. The Moto G50 feels fairly cheap and chunky in your hands thanks to some extensive bezels and its plasticky finish. As far as I can tell, video can only be captured at 1080p at 30fps – either that, or Motorola has hidden away the settings in a very hard-to-reach spot.

The case is handcrafted with high quality durable retro synthetic PU leather and TPU silicone gel to hold your phone in place for maximum protection. I went from a screen that looks – in many situations – almost indistinguishable from that of a far pricier phone to one more clearly lower-end.Although the moto G50 has a nicely sized screen, its 1600 x720 resolution is a little disappointing when you consider many smartphones have 1080p displays in this day and age. The only thing that makes it truly stand out is the fact that it's such a cheap 5G phone, and we won't blame you if that's what swings it for you. There are 30fps and 60fps modes but I’d advise sticking to 30fps as the higher frame rate disables stabilisation, which is a must for any handheld footage if you don’t want it to look like steaming garbage. Text appears slightly softer, although two weeks in I can’t say I’m left wishing I could stop using the Moto G50 and go back to a 1080p best phone.

With a unique crocodile textured design at the back, it adds aesthetic value to your phone while keeping it safe from bumps and impacts. The close-up photos the Moto G50 takes are nothing to get excited about either – the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro is in a totally different league for macro images. During our time testing the device, it certainly lived up to these bold claims and consistently had plenty of battery life left after a full day.

This can be a real headache in cheaper phones, particularly if you shoot an image to share in WhatsApp. There’s no fancy in-screen fingerprint reader here, with Motorola instead using a circular sensor on the back which, while functional, makes unlocking the phone when flat on your desk a bit of a chore. If there was a clue to its low cost, though, it comes in the form of the bezels, which are a bit thicker than you might expect on a 2021 phone.

However you recharge, expect a good day and a half between charges with certain days lasting even longer, depending on what you're doing. The case is also compatible with a magnetic holder in case you want to watch a movie in your car or navigate with your phone without taking the cover off.
